Responding to the call of humanity BRAC stands by the flood-affected people: UNO Umme Habiba

Last August-23 in Bandarban and Chittagong districts,thousands of people were inundated by mountain landslides coming down from upstream during heavy rains.The poor people were affected by the landslide.BRAC extends humanitarian assistance to these people in danger.

As part of the Disaster Risk Management Programme,BRAC has provided financial assistance to 5000 people through Bikash from the Chittagong Floods Emergency Response Project for a period of three months.At the same time,this non-governmental organization has helped 200 families with various materials to repair their houses.It was a three-month project.It was funded by “The Askehave Climate Foundation” under BRAC’s Disaster Risk Management Programme.This information was revealed at the closing workshop of Chittagong Flash Floods Emergency Response Project held at Bandarban Sadar Upazila Parishad Auditorium on Wednesday (December 13).Bandarban Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Umme Habiba Meera was present as the chief guest at the closing workshop organized by BRAC’s disaster risk management program.

Md.Farhad Hossain,Senior Project Officer of Disaster Risk Management Program presided over the event.The formalities of the workshop started with the welcome speech of BRAC’s Bandarban District Coordinator Md.Arif.During the chief guest’s speech,Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Umme Habiba Mira praised BRAC’s initiative and humanitarian activities.She said,responding to the call of humanity,BRAC has stood by the flood-affected people.In Bandarban Sadar Upazila 1800 people have been given financial assistance of 5,500 taka each.Uno Added and Said Wave tin,RCC pillars and accessories have been provided to 75 families for house repair.This has benefited the common people of the region.With such humanitarian assistance of BRAC,the disoriented people affected by floods and landslides have got the courage to turn around to some extent.Assistant Commissioner (Land) Nargis Sultana,Bandarban Press Club President Aminul Islam Baccu,Sadar Upazila Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Md.Jahangir Hossain were present as special guests on the occasion.Project manager Md.Mahbub ul Alam presented the detailed activities of the project in the workshop.Those concerned with the project said that the poor people in Bandarban district have received financial assistance of three crore rupees under the said project.Rupana Das,representative of NGO Caritas, Beneficiaries of the project Ume Nu Marma, Nazma Akhtar attended the workshop and gave valuable comments.Representatives of public and private departments, journalists and representatives of civil society were also present.
